Metaverse and Future Culture

Are we moving towards the other
or are we transforming the other into ourselves?
The Metaverse and Fictional People

The concept of the metaverse has recently become popular, and one of its supporting technologies is artificial intelligence. So, let’s get straight to the point: Is it possible for artificial intelligence to learn the most important feature of our human emotions in the process of training with big data? It depends on how you define emotion. Artificial intelligence needs a database. Our human database itself contains a lot of prejudice and discrimination, so artificial intelligence will naturally have such prejudice and discrimination. Therefore, the judgment of artificial intelligence on emotion is related to the database it is provided with. In the United States, scientists have investigated that artificial intelligence will also have racial discrimination, because the data given to it by humans contains such things, so it will also show such a tendency. So one thing we need to be wary of about artificial intelligence is that it is not theoretically perfect, objective, and value neutral. We can’t fully hope that artificial intelligence will have the perfect emotional pattern. It will learn the expression of human emotions, and it can even pretend to be real in the process of interacting with humans, but it will not understand the emotions themselves for a long time.
Others believe that artificial intelligence may learn by itself based on the information provided by humans, and acquire intelligence or emotions that humans do not have. This possibility exists naturally. But I think it’s best understood as a theoretical assumption. Because the topic of artificial intelligence is particularly complex, it is related to the nature of life. Artificial intelligence involves one of the most important philosophical questions: what is life and how can it be understood? This is the same question as how to define artificial intelligence.
Technological optimists believe that technology can solve everything, but this is not the case. Technology alone cannot solve problems. The question that needs to be answered urgently today is: What is life? What is the ethics of life? These issues are very important. Only by having a better understanding of this can we put positive settings into artificial intelligence and guide it to develop better, otherwise it will easily lose control.
Although we know that there are some settings in science fiction, such as Asimov’s three laws of robotics, it is still a bit simple. How we set ourselves up means how we see ourselves, and that’s always been the hardest thing to figure out. People have been asking who they are since ancient Greece, and that questioning remains the same today. But there is no doubt that thousands of years of human history have not been in vain, and human beings have become more civilized and humane as a whole.
Like human beings, artificial intelligence also has a growth process. According to the predictions of some scientists, if artificial intelligence suddenly acquires the ability to evolve, it will go from being lower than human intelligence to far surpassing human intelligence in a very short period of time. If human beings miss this window period, they will lose control of artificial intelligence and will be controlled by artificial intelligence instead. This window period is very short. The evolution of artificial intelligence is very fast. It takes decades for a person to grow up from a young age, and artificial intelligence may only take a few hours. In this process, it is difficult for you to know whether artificial intelligence has life consciousness. Even the Turing test is not so reliable to test artificial intelligence.
It is very simple for artificial intelligence to acquire human ethics, but when it surpasses human intelligence, it may re-question human ethics. After all, ethics is not only based on logic, but more from the traditions of history and culture, and the interconnectedness. of humanity.
At present, artificial intelligence should not surpass human beings so quickly, and it is even still in a stage of “low intelligence”. However, with the continuous application of artificial intelligence technology in practice, artificial intelligence has evolved faster. The more we use it, the more powerful it becomes. This involves a question of life consciousness. How do we understand consciousness? How did life originate? How to make a sudden leap from the material world to the spiritual world? This is a problem we currently have a hard time understanding.
Some physicists may understand life in terms of information. An information processing system may be the origin of consciousness. When it is complex enough and processing enough information, consciousness or super-artificial intelligence may naturally arise. If so, the nature of consciousness remains incomprehensible to us.

In 1940, science fiction writer Asimov proposed the “Three Principles of Robotics”

There are already many application scenarios of artificial intelligence in daily life, including mobile phones, and people can talk to it. Voice assistants like Siri are already quite common. Another example is the “Skynet Surveillance System”, the world is densely populated with cameras, and artificial intelligence needs to process these video information. A criminal, how to catch him? through face recognition technology. We are wearing masks now because of the epidemic, and it can recognize us. More advanced than face recognition technology, today’s technology can already distinguish the way people walk. Everyone’s walk is different. Through these, it can quickly find criminals from the video information system. These have shown that we are already living at the entrance to the once imagined “science fiction world”.
The reason why we talk about artificial intelligence technology first is that if this technology has achieved leapfrog development, such as artificial intelligence gaining superpowers, then the question of the metaverse becomes the question of “whose universe”. But if artificial intelligence technology is always in a state of low intelligence, the scale and depth of the metaverse will be limited, and it will only become a large virtual playground. Therefore, the most interesting thing is that the degree of artificial intelligence will determine the shape of the metaverse. As long as artificial intelligence takes a few steps further from its current foundation, we will not be able to tell whether we are dealing with humans or programs in the metaverse. In the metaverse, fictional people will officially become part of humanity.
Biological Characteristics of the Metaverse

Since artificial intelligence technology is the foundation of the metaverse, it is destined that the metaverse has the characteristics of human biology. If it is said that in the Internet age, human beings are regarded as one of the terminals, and the biological part of human beings is not connected to the system, then in the metaverse, human biological bodies will also be gradually opened and transformed into a system that can A mixture of electronic components and programs that are switched on. Moreover, the metaverse will be a mimetic system that mimics the functions of the human body, with different hardware and software corresponding to the functions of various human organs.
Just as 80 percent of the information the human brain processes comes from vision, so does the metaverse. Cameras all over the space are equivalent to the human visual organ, recording a large amount of video information every day. If we want to think deeply about the metaverse, we must first think deeply about what the cameras all over the earth’s surface mean for human beings. The camera can not only transmit the part of the content that the subject wants to transmit, but more cameras actually face the human unconscious or inhuman space and scene. Surveillance technology and its information storage technology allow humans to achieve an exact replica of the fluidity of time and space.
Therefore, I wrote more about cameras in my own works, and about this kind of human or inhuman peeping. In fact, I used novels to clarify my confusion. Although the camera is in the form of a machine, when we appear in the field of view of the camera, we do not know if anyone is watching us behind it. The camera records it, and it may be seen in the future, or it may never be seen. That is, you don’t know if anyone is watching right now, but you still feel weird, you feel a look, a feeling of being watched. It’s a big change in people’s lives. Because human life is very free, and when you are constantly being watched, that gaze becomes a micro-power that can make you uncomfortable and change something about you. Some people don’t care, don’t care, or will take a rebellious attitude, but most people will still converge under the camera, feeling unnatural, and some people simply have a performance personality. In fact, today’s people more or less have a kind of acting personality, but there is no way, because everyone is under this kind of watch. Including writers, it is good to write a book and publish it. Originally, there is no need to make an appearance. Like Qian Zhongshu said, it is enough to eat eggs. There is no need to know what a chicken that lays eggs looks like. But today, when a book is published, a writer sometimes not only makes an appearance, but also makes a video. Writers meeting readers face-to-face are very different from filming videos (including live broadcasts). Video can become a kind of physical evidence that transcends time and space, tying the writer’s improvisational thinking. Communication is a product of context. At that time, the situation changed, and some words were very strange and out of place. If they were put in the past, they would naturally dissipate. However, in the future, writers will continue to face the physical evidence of the video, and they are powerless to justify it. In this sense, the metaverse is a closed space where history is locked, and only parts of it can be modified with the highest authority, but with the development and popularization of technologies such as blockchain, this will become more and more difficult.
