Wacker Chemie AG is building a new production base in Europe to further strengthen its strategic focus on the production of specialty silicones. WACKER, together with its project partners, production sites and local city and regional government representatives, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new plant in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. WACKER will produce room-temperature vulcanized high-performance silicones in Karlovy Vary from the end of 2025 and high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber from 2028 for use in important future technology fields such as electric vehicles, healthcare technology and power grid expansion. WACKER plans to invest hundreds of millions of euros in this effort and will create up to 200 new jobs in Karlovy Vary during the first expansion phase. By building a new production base for silicone specialty products, the WACKER Group is further consolidating its position as a provider of customer solutions in key industrial sectors.

“Karlovy Vary will become a new important pillar of our silicone business in Europe to consolidate our position as a leading producer of silicone specialty products. Today we broke ground on the new production base, It is another milestone in our development history.” Dr. Christian Kirsten, a member of WACKER’s board of directors, told political and business guests, “As a professional silicone rubber manufacturer, all major growth markets have demand. , we are able to provide our customers with the solutions they desperately need when developing innovative products and technologies.”

Especially when conventional materials cannot or cannot continue to meet the increasingly stringent high requirements, people have to use customized silicone elastomers. WACKER SILICONES’ business is driven primarily by megatrends such as vehicle electrification, renewable energy and grid expansion. Dr. Kosten points out: “To meet the growing demand for such solutions, we must create the conditions now. The Karlovy Vary production site opens a new chapter in the success story of WACKER Silicones.”

The new production base is an expansion of WACKER’s existing production bases in Burghausen and Nünchritz, Germany, and can also create important conditions for the group to continue optimizing its production technology. “The Karlovy Vary production site will further enhance the flexibility of WACKER’s European production network, allowing us to better serve customers in Europe and abroad in the future,” said Dr. Kosten.

The new production base in Karlovy Vary will focus on the production of room-temperature vulcanized special silicones, and will increase the production of high-temperature vulcanized silicone mixtures in the future. WACKER will invest hundreds of millions of euros in Karlovy Vary and create about 200 jobs by 2028. It cannot be ruled out that there will be more personnel needs in the following years. After the production base is fully put into operation, it will be able to produce more than 20,000 tons of customized silicone products annually. The production of room-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber will start at the end of 2025, and high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber will be produced in Karlovy Vary from 2028.

When selecting a location for the production base, Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic won among multiple candidate locations. In the next few weeks and months, a 23,000-square-meter production building and corresponding infrastructure will be built. WACKER is working with US real estate developer Panattoni and the Czech real estate group Accolade. Panattoni is responsible for coordinating the construction, and Accolade is the owner of the production site and the new building envelope.

Karlovy Vary provides ideal conditions for WACKER’s silicone production. “Karlovy Vary’s proximity to Burghausen and Pilsen, its relatively low energy costs, and its many highly qualified employees ultimately led to a quick decision,” Dr. Kosten noted.

WACKER SILICONES is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of silicone products, supplying more than 2,800 highly specialized and innovative products, including silicone-based oils, emulsions, resins, elastomers and sealants, Silane, silane-terminated polymer, fumed silica, etc. These products can effectively improve the value and efficacy of customers’ final products and create value-added effects for customers. The silicone products produced by WACKER Silicones are mainly used in industries such as automotive, construction, chemicals, cosmetics, medical technology, energy and electronics, paper and textiles. ‍
