NXT: A Novel Silane Coupling Agent for Rubber Compounds

Silane coupling agents are widely used in rubber industry to improve the physical and mechanical properties of rubber compounds, especially those filled with silica or other non-black pigments. Among them, bis [3- (triethoxysilyl) propyl] tetrasulfide (Si69) is one of the most popular and effective silane coupling agents for rubber-silica systems. However, Si69 has some drawbacks, such as high viscosity, low solubility in common solvents, high volatility, and tendency to hydrolyze and form by-products.

NXT (S- (octanoyl) mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane) is a new silane coupling agent that has been developed to overcome these limitations of Si69. NXT has a molecular structure similar to Si69, except that it has an octanoyl group instead of a tetrasulfide group. This modification results in several advantages over Si69, such as:

• Lower viscosity and higher solubility in common solvents, which facilitate its handling and application.
• Lower volatility and higher thermal stability, which reduce its loss during processing and storage.
• Higher reactivity with silica and rubber, which enhance its coupling efficiency and performance.
• Lower tendency to hydrolyze and form by-products, which improve its environmental friendliness and safety.

NXT has been tested in various rubber-silica systems, such as natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM), and butyl rubber (IIR). The results show that NXT can significantly improve the properties of rubber compounds, such as tensile strength, modulus, elongation at break, abrasion resistance, tear resistance, dynamic properties, aging resistance, and reversion resistance. Moreover, NXT can also reduce the amount of silica and other additives required to achieve the desired properties, which can lower the cost and environmental impact of rubber production.

In conclusion, NXT is a novel silane coupling agent that can replace Si69 in rubber-silica systems. It has superior properties and performance over Si69 in terms of handling, application, reactivity, efficiency, stability, and safety. NXT is expected to become a new generation of sustainable silane coupling agent for rubber industry.
